Episode Synopsis
In this episode Rocky Roark interviews the amazing designer, educator and mentor, Jamal Collins (aka JayWorking), on how he broke through and struggled as a creative in the 90s and later during the recession of ’08.
One of the most inspiring things about Jamal is how much he helps those around him, specifically the younger generation find their creativity and the right path in life.
Its also pretty amazing to hear someone who’s from a different generation and a different background share their story, so I hope you enjoy what he has to say.
Nuggets of Wisdom:
1) Community & Culture is Important – Where you come from and the community around you are important parts of your culture and where you come from. When you can, help promote your community and culture and help those around you reach their goals and dreams.
2) Find Work that Relates to Your Passions – Don’t get bogged down by a job you don’t love or work that you’re not passionate about. Instead find those opportunities or create your own opportunities that hone in and focus on what you’re passionate about. Your career isn’t about just a “job” or “work” its about what you love doing and don’t want to stop doing. Find your “true self” and package it up so that you’re indispensable.
3) Find Your Own Voice & The Right Voices Around You – You need to be able to pick yourself up and push yourself forward with your own drive and thoughts but at the same time surround yourself with people who support you and want to see you succeed. Find those voices and keep them with you, even if their voices you listen to on podcast, in YouTube videos, read in books or see on stage. Keep those voices close to yours and never let anyone put you down.
